Question
In Section 9.2, a group of students were studying the life of a mayfly. For a sample of 1,000 may flies, they found the average life span to be 8.25 hours with a standard deviation of 1.23. You are going to conduct a hypothesis test to determine whether this sample provides evidence that the average mayfly lives more than 8 hours. Formulate the hypotheses for this test. Use the. 01 level of significance. Formulate the hypothesis for this test. What, if anything, do we need to assume about the population or the sample for this test to be valid? Find the rejection region. Find the value of the test statistic. What is your conclusion? Interpret what your conclusion means this situation.Explanation / Answer
a) H0:mu<=8 (the average mayfly lives atmost 8 hours)
H1:mu>8 (the avergae mayfly lives more than 8 hours)
b) Model:Random sampling.
Sampling dsitribution:Normal.
c) At alph=0.01, the rejection region is 2.58.
d) Z=(xbar-mu)/(s/sqrt N-1), where xbar is sample mean, mu is population mean, N is sample size.
=(8.25-8)/(1.23/sqrt 1000-1)
=6.42
e) The test statistic falls in critical region. Therefore, reject H0, to conclude that avergae mayfly lives more than 8 hours.
