Question

Admission counselors are interested in whether or not students from private schools enter college with greater competence than students from the public school system. To test the hypothesis, the researcher samples 100 students from a private school producing an average score on the competence measure of 74.60. The national mean on this same competence test is 71.35 with a standard deviation of 28.

a)Complete the 6-step process of hypothesis testing for this problem. Test at the .01 level of significance

Explanation / Answer

the n = 100, therefore z stat normal hypothesis test will be done

the null hypothesis = ho= u = 71.35

the alternate hypothesis = Ha = >71.35

as the significance level = 0.01

therefore the critical region = z >2.33

the z stat = (74.6 - 71.35)/(28/sqrt(100))

= 1.16

as the z stat = 1.16 <2.33

there fore we will not reject the null hypothesis
