Question

We seek to estimate the proportion of Rutgers student who are planning to buy a new cell phone is the next year. We want to estimate the proportion with a (95%) Bound on the error of 0.03. Hoe big a simple random sample should we take? 2) We want to estate the average amount spent on books (for courses) this semester by Rutgers students, with a (95%) bound on the error of $25. We believe that most (say 95%) student spend between $ 50 to $450, and the amount is roughly normally distributed. How big a srs should we take?

Explanation / Answer

1)The required sample size is:

z(0.95)^2*p(1-p)/E^2

=1.96^2*0.5*0.5/0.03^2

=1067.11

or 1067

Since no prior estimate is given let p=0.5

2)Use the range rule to find standard deiation:

(Maximum-minimum)/4

=(450-50)/4

=100

The sample size is:

(z(0.95)*sigma/error)^2

=(1.96*100/25)^2

=61.46 or 62
