Question
depicts the following scenario with the accompanying figure. Two cats are sitting side by side on a fence when they're startled by a dog. The cats jump off the fence with equal speeds, but different initial angles relative to the horizontal. Cat 1 jumps at an angle of 45 degree above the horizontal; cat 2 jumps an angle of 45 degree below the horizontal. Now we will consider a slightly different scenario to Example 4-13. Part A Suppose the two cats jump from an elevation of 2.5 m with an initial speed of 4 m/s. what is the speed of each cat when it is 1.0 m above the ground?Explanation / Answer
Applying energy conservation,
PEi + KEi = PEf + KEf
m g (Hi) + m (v0^2) / 2 = m g (Hf) + m vf^2 /2
vf^2 = 2 g (Hi - Hf) + v0^2
for both cats,
Hi - Hf = 2.5 - 1 = 1.5 m
and v0 = 4 m/s
hence final speed for both cats will be same.
vf^2 = (2 x 9.8 x 1.5) + 4^2
vf= 6.74 m/s for both cats
