Question
Two identical conducting small spheres are placed with their centers 0.400 m apart. One is given a charge of -12.0 nC and the other a charge of -14.0 nC.
(a) Find the electric force exerted by one sphere on the other.
(b) The spheres are connected by a conducting wire. Find the electric force each exerts on the other after they have come to equilibrium.
This is the correct answer if the charges had been given in Coulombs rather than nC. N direction ---Select--- toward the other sphere away from the other sphere
Explanation / Answer
a)
F = k*Q1*Q2/r^2
= 9*10^9*(12*10^-9)*(14*10^-9)/0.4^2
= 9.45*10^-6 N
direction = away from the other sphere
b)
Charges will distribute equally on each
So, charges on each = (-12-14)/2 = -13 nC
So, force , F = 9*10^9*(13*10^-9)*(13*10^-9)/0.4^2
= 9.51*10^-6 N <-------answer
direction = away from the oher sphere
