Question

The potential as a function of position x is shown in the graph in the figure. Which statement about the electric field is true? The electric field is zero at x = 0, its magnitude is at a maximum at x = 5 cm, and the field is directed to the right there. The electric field is zero at x = 5, its magnitude is at a maximum at x = 0 cm, and the field is directed to the right there. The electric field is zero at x = 0, its magnitude is at a maximum at x = 15 cm, and the field is directed to the left there. The electric field is zero at x = 10, its magnitude is at a maximum at x = 5 cm, and the field is directed to the left there.

Explanation / Answer

First of all,
electric field is related to the electric potential as follows:

E = -dV/dx
so at x = 0
dV/dx = 0, so electric field is zero at this point.

at x = 5cm
rate of decrease of potential is maximum, so elctric field is maximum at this point.

also since potential decreases from x = 0 to x = 10 cm......and
An Electric field always points in the direction of decreasing Electric Potential.
so electric field point to right there.

option A
