Question

The answers for (a)=4.5 microfarads (b)=56.3 microjoules (c)= on the left, u1=u2=9.38 microjoules on the right u3=37.5 microjoules

I have no clue how to arrive at these answers. Someone please help me!
4. Energy Storage in a Capacitor Circuit Consider the capacitor circuit shown in the figure The battery has value V 5 V and all three of the individual capacitors have value C 3 uF. (a) Find the equivalent capacitance of the combination of three capacitors. total potential energy Urot of the capacitors. (c) Find the potential energies of the individual capacitors. (Number the capacitors 1, 2, and 3 and find the individual energies Ui, U2, and U3.)

Explanation / Answer

a] Ceq = equivalent of two capacitors in series + one in parallel

= C/2 +C = 1.5*3 = 4.5 uF

b] Utot = 0.5 CeqV^2 = 0.5*4.5*5^2 = 56.25 uJ

C] U1 = U2 = 0.5*C*V1^2 = 0.5*3*(5/2)^2 = 9.38 uJ

U3 = 0.5 CV^2 = 0.5*3*5^2 = 37.5 uJ
