At the top of the trajectory, the shell explodes into two fragments of equal mass (see the land, assuming that the gure). One fragment, whose speed immediately after the explosion is zero, falls vertically. How far from the gun does the other fragment terrain is level and that alr drag is negligible? here,
initial speed , v0 = 25 m/s
v0x = v0 * cos(theta) = 11.7 m/s
theta = 62 degree
the time of flight , t = 2 * (v0 * sin(theta)) /g
t = 2 * ( 25 * sin(62)) /9.8
t = 4.5 s
after the exposion,
let the speed of fragment be vx
m * v0x = (m/2 * 0 + m/2 * vx )
vx = 2 *11.7 = 23.47 m/s
the horizontal range , R = v0x * t/2 + vx * t/2
R = 11.7 * 4.5/2 + 23.47 * 4.5/2
R = 79 m
the horizontal distance travelled is 79 m
