Question

6. The E-k diagram of a free electron (dashed line) and semiconductor (solid line - extended and reduced zone) are shown below. Why can electrons in the conduction band of a semiconductor be modeled as free electrons? Justify using no more than 3 sentences and semiconductor (solid line (10 pts) The E-k diagram of a free elect tron line) the conduction band of a d in can electrons extended and reduced zone) are shown below. using no more than three sentences semiconductor be modeled as free Why electrons? Justify (the conduct 'n band where au the free electrum mane. be mo as free eteowo Can ney th conduct on band of the semicord cause of the Ev alance band enum)

Explanation / Answer

The the energy band gap (Eg) for semiconductors is very small, hence the electrons from valence band can jump into the conduction band(i.e the electron gains energy required to cross Eg) due to thermal excitation. Once the electron breaks away from it's covalent bond and enters the conduction region it is free to move about the lattice thereby participating in conduction.
