List and briefly describe the main sources of noise encountered when measuring an optical signal. Give relevant formulae and suggest remedies where applicable. A high-speed pin-photodiode a responsivity of R = 1 A/W and capacitance C = 1 pF operates in the photoconductive mode into a resistive load RL = 50 Ohm. Calculate the bandwidth and sensitivity of the resulting photoreceiver circuit at a temperature T = 300K. The same photodiode is connected to a transimpedance amplifier with an open-loop gain of A = 99 and feedback resistor R_F = 1 k Ohm find the new value of sensitivity assuming a noise-free wideband amplifier. The feedback resistor is found to have a shunt capacitance of 200 fF. How does this affect your results? Describe the options av

Explanation / Answer

When we detect the optical signal in general we will use photo diodes or power meters. In both the cases they have some efficiency to detect the light and this introduces the Gaussian fluctuations for the measured intensity.

Secondly, we have the noise regarding threshold of the detector. Threshold power defined as the power above which the detector will be insensitive or we can say that it is saturated.

Third source for noise is called as shot noise i..e the minimum intensity determined by the detector in the absebce of signal which is due to the thermal ejection of electrons from the detector plane. So the background light and temperature also introduces noise to the measured optical signal.
