Question

In the figure, mock 1 has mass m_1 = 442 g, block 2 has mass m_2 = 544 g, and the pulley is on a frictionless horizontal and has radius R = 4.71 on. When released from rest, block 2 falls 76.1 cm in 5.31 s without the cord slipping on the pulley. (a) What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the blocks? What are (b) tension T_2 (the tension force on the block 2) and (c) tension T_2 (the tension force on the block 1)? (d) What is the magnitude of the pulley's angular acceleration? (e) What is its rotational inertia? Caution: Try to avoid rounding off answers along the way to the solution use g = 9.81 m/s^2.

Explanation / Answer

a) acceleration = 2 * d / t2 = 2 * 0.761 / 5.312

= 0.054 m/s2

b) tension T2 = m2 (g - a) = 0.544 (9.81 - 0.054)

= 5.31 N

c)  tension T1 = m1 (g + a) = 0.442 (9.81 + 0.054)

= 4.36 N

d) angular acceleration = linear acc / r = 0.054 / 0.0471

= 1.146 rad/s2

e) I = (5.31 - 4.36) * 0.0471 / 1.146

= 0.0390 kg.m2
