goodnight everyone! i need help with the 3 questions above! any explanations would be helpful. thank you

When a beam of gamma radiation passes through an absorbing material the number of photons absorbed (dn) in a thickness of the material (dx) is proportional to the number of photons (n) arriving at that layer of material. This is expressed in the following equation: dn = -mu n dx Explain the "negative sign" in this equation. In the equation above, why is mu called "linear" coefficient of absorption? Can you see why is the ratio of the linear coefficient of absorption to the density of the material called "mass absorption coefficient"?

Explanation / Answer

Negative sign means "dn" is intrinsically negative as the number of gamma rays decreasing due to absorption.
