In starvation mode, the body starts to burn fat, releasing ketones in the body. This is a process that is called “ketosis” and is the basis of the ketogenic diet. The Pruvit promotional video describe these ketones as: “Thousands of little motivational speakers running through your body. They give you energy, they give you focus, and they make you feel incredible, and yes they make the fat fall off your body because it is finally being burned off and no longer being guarded by the carbs or protein.” We will critique this claim in the next 2 questions.

a. Given that ketosis is a process that occurs when the body goes into starvation mode, why is it problematic to call ketones “little motivational speakers” that help to aid in “focus and fat loss?”

a.Firstly ketones are type of acid which the body can form when there is insufficient carbohydrates to be burnt for energy.Without carb the body turns to another energy source which is fat.Ketones are made in the liver due to fat break down and this process is called as ketogenesis.

Ketones are formed in people who don't have diabetes in many ways such as extreme exercise,low carb diet, fasting and so on.This is called as ketosis and it is a normal response to starvation.

For people with diabetes,ketones are formed for the same reason but often occurs because there is not enough insulin to move the carbs from the blood stream to the cells to be used for energy.We might think it is good to break fat for fuel but in someone who has diabeted,Ketosis can become dangerous due to continued lack of insulin.This leads to the fat cells continue to release fat into the circulation,the liver continues to churn ketones.Ketones are acids and they lower the ph of the blood making it too acidic and it caused life threatening situation.So therefore it is problematic to call ketones as little motivational speakers that aid in fat loss.

B.Ketosis does not seem to have an negative impact on athletic performance.Supplement with ketone bodies can help prevent negative side effects of strict ketogenic diets.Glucose sparing may help athletes to perform for longer period of time by increasing exercise tolerance.This is important for endurance athletes.
