Answer : Gametangia in Charophytes
Charophytes are a group of green algae which are found to be the ancestors of the land plants. In the aquatic environment, the sperms can swim directly towards the eggs. The aquatic environment also helped in maintaining the gametes in its hydrated state until they could fertilize. The terrestrial plants had to adapt to water-free environment for reproduction. The major adaptation was the development of gametes within the gametangia. The female gametangium produces the egg cells and the male gametangium produces the sperm cells both of which are protected by a layer of cells to prevent them from getting dried up. The dispersion of sperm to the egg cell is carried out by non-water based methods like wind pollination and insect pollination.
