number 12 only

Z-1 Z-2+ Z-3 Z-4 + 12. T defective in the synthesis of nutrient Q. How many genes are in the pathway? he following table shows the results of complementation analysis for mutants Mutant #11 - I + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1-1 + Mutant #21 + 1 Mutant #3 | | + | - | + | + | + | + Mutant #4 | + | - | + | - | + | + | + Mutant #51 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1-1 + I- Mutant #6 | - | + | + | + | + | - | + 1 13. A plant with two linked genes, G and H, produces gametes as shown belo Identify the parental and recombinant gametes, calculate the recombinatio freuency hetween G and H, and the distance between the genes in cM. Explanation / Answer

Complementation analysis provides an information about how many genes or functions might be involved in a specific pathway. When mutants are part of the same complementation group (in other words: fail to complement one another), we can infer they have mutations in the same gene. So, this allows us to get a minimum estimate of the number of genes involved in our pathway of interest. We arrive at this number by looking at each pair of mutants and looking for complementation between them.

+ indicates complementation occurs ( different complementation group , means mutants present on different genes )

- indicates no complementation occurs (same complementation group , means mutants present on same genes )

Complementation group

1. mutant 1 and mutant 6

2. mutant 2 and mutant 4

3. mutant 5 and mutant 7

mutants in the same complementary groups have mutation in the same gene. so, there are three genes involved in the pathway.
