Question
Recall that the binding of acetylcholine to its receptors in endothelial cells leads to the production of nitric oxide. How would nitric oxide production be affected if you were to treat endothelial cells with a drug that prevented the opening of the calcium channels found at the plasma membrane? How do you expect this drug to affect the relaxation of smooth muscle cells? Recall that the binding of acetylcholine to its receptors in endothelial cells leads to the production of nitric oxide. How would nitric oxide production be affected if you were to treat endothelial cells with a drug that prevented the opening of the calcium channels found at the plasma membrane? How do you expect this drug to affect the relaxation of smooth muscle cells?Explanation / Answer
Calcium and Calmodulin are stimulators of constitutive NOS(Nitric Oxide Synthase). If the calcium channels are blocked intracellular calcium concentration would be low and NOS won't be stimulated. NO combines with GC and converts GTP to cGMP which produces muscular relaxation by activating K+ Channels and causing Hyperpolarization. Hence this drug would inhibit muscular relaxation
