7.) There are several islands off the coast of Michigan and you are examining the local species richness of each island. Some of these island are close to the mainland, while some are farther out in Lake Michigan. Likewise, some are small in area (size) while some are large. Using MacArthur and Wilson's island biogeography model, explain what you would expect to find in regards to the number of species, immigration rate, and extinction rate on each of the island types. (5 pts) *Close and Small: *Far and Smal *Close and Large: *Far and Large: Numaber of Species

Explanation / Answer

Ans- close and small- the close distance will remove geographical barrier problem and small area will lead to higher density so it will have highest species richness.

Far and small- the far distance will lead to low immigration but small area will add on high density even on low number of organisms so it will have a species richness low than the close and small but higher than all other islands.

Close and large- the closeness will lead to a higher immigration to island but the larger area will affect the density so it will have a species richness lower than the above two but higher than the far and large islands.

Far and large- these will have the lowest species richness as they are located very far so a little number of immigrant will go there and also large area will lead to even low density so there will be lowest species richness.
