PROTISTS AND FUNGI In one paragraph, explain the role of primary and secondary endosymbiosis in the evolution of the protists For the four supergroups of protists, make a table listing the characteristics of and three examples for each supergroup (Excavata, "SAR" clade, Archaeplastida, and Unikonta). Name two cal community, and in one paragraph describe that role. . Define the following fungal structures: (a) hyphae; (b) mycelium and explain in two to dhre sentences the the nutritional mode employed by fungi. State one difference between the cell walls of fungi compared to the cell walls of plants. Explain the reproductive cycle of a typical fungus State 2 significant industrial uses of fungi. UNIT 3: PLANTSExplanation / Answer
Uses of Fungi in industrial level : Fungi such as penicillium are used to produce Penicillin antibiotics Fungi are used in the food industry to prepare wine, alcohol, cheese and bread.
A typical fungi like Candida reproduces asexually by budding. Fungi such as Penicillium reproduce by spores. Spores are just like plant seeds. The most common method of vegetative reproduction is fragmentation. The hypha breaks up into small fragments. Each fragment develops into a new individual. Sexual reproduction also occurs in fungi with the help of zygospores, ascospores etc.
The main difference between a fungal cell wall and plant cell wall is that fungal cell wal is made up of chitin whereas the plant cell wall is made of cellulose.
Hyphae are tubular projections of the multicellular fungus. Mycelium are collection of hyphae which form a mesh like network. Fungi get their nutrition from the dead or decaying matter. The vegetative mycelium penetrate the food source and release digestive enzymes which help in assimilation of food. Some fungi form symbiotic relationship with plants and algae for their food.
