Question
Answer a)150 Answer b) Answer c) Answer d) loumanan 10co.ec S2 8) In a six-cylinder V6 engine, the even-numbered cylinders are on the left and the odd- 210 numbered cylinders are on the right. A good firing order is a sequence of the numbers through 6 in which the sides alternate. Hes 4 a) How many good firing sequences are there that start on the left? b) How many possible good firing sequences are there? How many possible good firing sequences are there for an eight cylinder V8 engine? c) 1002 1009 Answer a)Explanation / Answer
As even numbered cylinders are on the left and odd numbered cylinders are on the right we can represent the arrangement as :
2 1
4 3
6 5
a) No of firing sequences from left to right
As firing is alternate that means first fire will be from left then right
Thus in case of first fire from left side cylinder has 3 choices(2,4,6) , in the same way in case of second fire, cylinder on right have 3 choices(1,3,5).
After two rounds of fire, for the third round, i.e. fire from left cylinder has 2 choices (as 1 cylinder from left is already fired), and also for fourth round i,e, fire from right cylinder has 2 choices.
For the fifth round i.e. for the fire from left cylinder (fire from 2 left cylinders is already done ) so only1 choice left and also for final round from right cylinder 1 choice is left.
Thus we can sum up the number of possible cases as = 3 x3 x 2 x 2 x 1 x 1 = 36
b) In this, we can fire first from left or from right both and these possibilities are mutually exclusive.
we already have cases for firing starting from left , in the same way we can say there are 36 firing sequences that start from right.
By Addition principle , there are 36 +36 = 72 posible firing sequences.
C) For an eight Cyclinder V 8 engine, assuming that the arrangement remains same.
2 1
4 3
6 5
8 7
As done in a ) part Considering the number of sequences from the left :
First round of fire from left cylinder have 4 choices and also second round of fire from right cylinder have 4 choices
in third round of fire from left have 3 choices and in fourth round of fire from right have 3 choices. and so on.
Thus, number of sequences starting from the left = 4 x 4 x 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 1 x 1 = 24 x 24 = 576
Similarly, number of sequences starting from the right = 576
Total number of sequences = 576 + 576 = 1152
