Question
This year a high school had an increase of 320 students. The enrollment last year was 1200 students. Write a ratio of the increase in the number of students this year to the total number of students this year simplified to the lowest terms.
Before the age of 65, men suffer heart attacks more than women in a ratio of 3:1. For every 90 men who suffer heart attacks before age 65, how many women would be expected to suffer a heart attack? Use a proportion to find your answer. Show all work. Be sure to write a sentence that explains your answer
Explanation / Answer
1. Increase in number of students = 320
Total number of students this year = 1200+320= 1520
Ratio = 320/1520 = 64/304 = 16/76 = 4/19
Ratio = 4:19
2.Ratio of men to women = 3:1
So, for every 3 men, 1 woman has heart attack
So, for 1 man, 1/3women has heart attack
For 90 men, women = 90/3 = 30 women
So, for every 90 men, 30 women have heart attack.
Ratio = 90/30 = 3:1
