Question

Below is a boxplot of the men's weights (in lbs) from the same sample of 40 men. Use the boxplot to estimate the range of men's weights: _____ Estimate the median weight of the men: _____ Is the distribution slightly skewed left (low weights) or right (high weights)? _____ How do you know there are no outliers in the weights of these men? If every made in the sample lost 10 pounds, what changes would you see in the boxplot? BE SPECIFIC: Any change in shape? What about the location of the boxplot?

Explanation / Answer

a) approximate range =maximum-minimum =240-120=120

b) median =190

c)yes it seems to be skewed to the rifght

d)as interquartile range IQR=190-155=35

hence lower fence =Q1-1.5(!QR)=155-1.5*35 =102.5 which is lower then minimum value

upper fence =Q3+1.5(IQR)=242.5 whcih is higher then maximum value

hence no outliers

e) the shape will remain same

location of box plot will shift 10 units downside
