Question

The number of children, x, belonging to each of eight families registering for swimming was 2, 2, 2, 4, 6, 4, 1, 2. Find the mean, x. (Give answer correct to 2 decimal places)

Find the median rate paid at Jim's Burgers if the workers' hourly rates are the following.

$4.35, $4.10, $4.50, $4.45, $4.30, $4.35, $4.25, $4.40

Consider the following sample.

2, 4, 7, 8, 9

(a) Find the mean.

(b) Find the median.

(c) Find the mode. (If there is no mode, enter NONE.)

(d) Find the midrange.

Consider the following sample

6, 8, 7, 5, 3, 7

(a) Find the mean. (Enter NONE if the mean does not exist.)

(b) Find the median. (Enter NONE if the median does not exist.)

(c) Find the mode. (Enter NONE if the mode does not exist.)

(d) Find the midrange. (Enter NONE if the midrange does not exist.)

You are responsible for planning the parking needed for a new 256-unit apartment complex, and you're told to base the needs on the statistic "average number of vehicles per household is 1.7."

(a) Which average (mean, median, mode, midrange) will be helpful to you?

mean ,median, mode ,midrange

(b) Explain why 1.7 cannot be the median, the mode, or the midrange for the variable "number of vehicles."

Midrange, median, and mode are all numbers containing 0.5 in them.

Midrange, median, and mode are all whole numbers.

Median and midrange either contain 0.5 or are whole numbers. Mode is a whole number.

(c) If the owner wants parking that will accommodate 77% of all the tenants who own vehicles, how many spaces must you plan for?

Consider the following sample.

20, 16, 19, 11, 20, 23

(a) Find the range.

(b) Find the variance. (Give your answer correct to two decimal places.)

(c) Find the standard deviation. (Give your answer correct to two decimal places.)

Consider the following sample.

6, 12, 14, 7, 8, 9

(a) Find the range.

(b) Find the variance. (Give your answer correct to two decimal places.)

(c) Find the standard deviation. (Give your answer correct to two decimal places.)

Given the sample 6, 5, 9, 9, 7, 7, 4, 7, 4, 13, find the following. (Round your answers to two decimal places.)

(a) Variance s2 using formula below

s2 =

(b) Variance s2 using formula below

s2 =

(c) Standard deviation, s

One aspect of the beauty of scenic landscape is its variability. The elevations (feet above sea level) of 12 randomly selected towns in the Finger Lakes Regions of Upstate New York are recorded here.

1036    901      1117    847      955      604

(a) Find the mean. (Give your answer correct to the nearest whole number.)

(b) Find the standard deviation. (Give your answer correct to the nearest whole number.)

Explanation / Answer

1. The number of children, x, belonging to each of eight families registering for swimming was 2, 2, 2, 4, 6, 4, 1, 2. Find the mean, x. (Give answer correct to 2 decimal places)

Number of observations, N = 8, Sum of X = 2 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 2 = 23

mean(x) = Sum(X)/N = 23/8 = 2.88

2. Find the median rate paid at Jim's Burgers if the workers' hourly rates are the following.

$4.35, $4.10, $4.50, $4.45, $4.30, $4.35, $4.25, $4.40

Arrange the data in ascending order

$4.10, $4.25, $4.30, $4.35, $4.35, $4.40, $4.45, $4.50

As there are even number of observed data (8 observed count), the median is the average of the middle 2 values.

i.e. median = (4th value + 5th value)/2 = (4.35 + 4.35)/2 = $4.35

3. Consider the following sample.

2, 4, 7, 8, 9

(a) Find the mean.

mean = (2+4+7+8+9)/5 = 6

(b) Find the median.

median is the middle value(i.e. 3rd value as there are only odd counts of obered data),

median = 7

(c) Find the mode. (If there is no mode, enter NONE.)

NONE, as all the values are aberved only once

(d) Find the midrange.

midrange = (2+9)/2 = 5.5
