Question

Data Visualization Via FitBits

Personal fitness trackers including FitBit, Apple Watch, and others are utilizing data visualization to present activity monitoring data. The data may include the number of steps taken, the percent of goal achieved, count of flights of stairs, distance traveled, calories burned, and hours slept. Additionally, users can track their progress over time by viewing their performance from day to day or week to week. In a minimum of 250 words, address the following:

How can graphical perception be utilized in the design of the dashboards for fitness tracking devices?

Do you think the dashboards for fitness tracking devices are an integral aspect of fitness tracking? How do you think they motivate individuals to remain active? Explain.

Please provide 2–3 peer-reviewed references.

Explanation / Answer

Fitness trackers such as FitBit, Apple Watch, and others collect data on the number of steps taken, the percent of goal achieved, count of flights of stairs, distance traveled, calories burned, and hours slept.

How can graphical perception be utilized in the design of the dashboards for fitness tracking devices?

A display of the number of steps per day over the past 30 days gives the user a clear picture of the pattern. This would clearly tell him whether he is maintaining the required number of steps, goals achieved, stairs climbed, distance walkied, calories burned, and hours slept. In case of a decline in the required minimum quantities, he knows to better step it up, and in case of over doing the stuff, he knows to cut short on it.

Do you think the dashboards for fitness tracking devices are an integral aspect of fitness tracking? How do you think they motivate individuals to remain active? Explain.

The dashboards are an integral part of the tracking as mere display of the data is not sufficient and the memory would not be able to track any of the trend or pattern. If the user is oversleeping, the dashboard would easily tell him the same in an upward trend, and that would tell him to cut short on the same. Similalry, if there is a reduction in the number of calories burned, he knows to step up the exercises and hence help in burning the calories.
