Question
Event A: Randomly select a member of the U.S. Congress. Event B: Randomly select a male U.S. Senator. Students A biology class has 32 students. Of these, 10 students are biology majors and 14 students are male. Of the biology majors, four are male. Find the probability that a randomly selected student is male or a biology major. Conference A math conference has in attendance of 4950 people, of these, 2110 are college professors and 2575 are female. Of the college professors, 960 are female. Find the probability that a randomly selected attendee is female or a college professor.Explanation / Answer
Answer to question# 14)
total = 4950 people
Professors = 2110
Female = 2575
Female and Professor = 960
.
we need to find the probability of "female or coleege professor"
As per the formula of probability we get:
P(Female or Professor) = P(female) + P(professor) - P(female AND professor)
We got :
P(female) = 2575/4950
P(professor) = 2110/4950
P(female AND professor) = 960/4950
.
On plugging these values we get:
P(female or professor) = (2575/4950) + (2110/4950) - (960/4950)
P(female or professor) = 3725/4950 = 0.7525
Thus the Probability of a selected attendee to be a female or college professor is 0.7525
