Question

The table below indicates the method of payment (broken down by age) for a sample of 200 purchases at a local retail store:

1. Single-event experiment, single question/characteristic (or single-event "and"):

a) What is the probability that a randomly selected purchase was paid for with a debit/credit card?

b) What is the probability that a randomly selected purchase was made by someone 30-39 years old?

c) What is the probability that a randomly selected purchase was made by someone 50-59 and was paid for with cash?

d) What is the probability that a randomly selected purchase was made by someone 60+ and was paid for with a debit/credit card?

Years Cash Debit/Credit 20-29 14 27 30-39 23 36 40-49 13 28 50-59 12 20 60 + 18 9

Explanation / Answer

a. Here total of Debit/Credit is 120 and grand total is 200

So Probability of purchase for debit/credit=120/200=0.6

b. Now total of group 30-39 is 59, so Probability of purchase made from it is 59/200=0.295

c. Here we have common number for both this event as 12, so required probabiliyt is 12/200=0.06

d. Similary like c probability is 9/200=0.045
