Question
Determine whether the random variable is discrete or continuous and tell us why. Answer both parts a and b.a. The temperature of a patient.
b. The amount of money charged to a patient. Determine whether the random variable is discrete or continuous and tell us why. Answer both parts a and b.
a. The temperature of a patient.
b. The amount of money charged to a patient. Determine whether the random variable is discrete or continuous and tell us why. Answer both parts a and b.
a. The temperature of a patient.
b. The amount of money charged to a patient.
Explanation / Answer
A continous variable can take any value between its minimum and maximum limits. It may be an integer or a fractional value e.g. weight of students in a class. The weight variable may take any value such as 53kg, 70kg, 66.5kg and so on
A discrete variable can only take positive interger values and can not have fractional values. e.g. the possible outcomes in a roll of fair dice. The outcome is a discrete variable having values 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and can not take any fractional value.
Solution-A:
The temperature of a patient - Continuous variable. The temperature may take any integer value such as 98 degrees or may be fractional such as 99.4 degrees
Solution-B:
The amount of money charged to a patient - Continuous variable. The money charged may take any integer value such as $100 or may be fractional such as $102.5
