Question
In one study of smokers who tried to quit smoking with nicotine patch therapy, 39 were smoking one year after the treatment, and 32 were not smoking one year after the treatment (based on data from "High-Dose Nicotine Patch Therapy, " by Dale et al.. Journal of the American Medical Association. Vol. 274, No. 17). Use a 0.10 significance level to test the claim that among smokers who try to quit with nicotine patch therapy, the majority are smoking a year after the treatment. Do these results suggest that the nicotine patch therapy is ineffective?Explanation / Answer
Below are the null and alternate hypothesis
H0: p <= 0.5
H1: p > 0.5
In study of 71 subjects, 39 were smoking. i.e. pcap = 39/71 = 0.5493
Value of test statistics,
t = (0.5493 - 0.5)/sqrt(0.5*0.5/71) = 0.8308
degrees of freedom = 70
p-value = 0.2045
As p-value is greater than significance level of 0.01, we fail reject the null hypothesis. There is not enough evidence that suggests the nicotine patch therapy is ineffective.
