Question
Let's examine the relationship between Cl's and hypothesis tests: (a) You calculate a 95% confidence interval for mu and come up with (10,22). If you test H_0: mu = 27 and use alpha = .05, will you reject H_0? Why or why not? (b) Now you calculate a 95% CI for mu and come up with (-3,6). If you test H_0: mu = 7 and use alpha = .10, will you reject H_0? Why or why not? (c) Finally, you calculate a 95% CI for for mu and come up with (-34,-28). If you test H_0: mu = -23 and use alpha = .01, will you reject H_0? Why or why not?Explanation / Answer
a)Yes. because from the data 95% chance is the mean lies between 10 and 22.
b)No. Because again 95 % chance is mean lies between -3 and 6. our alpha is .1. so, we could take a 90% confidence interval also. Anyway, a 90% conidence interval would be broader. and that could contain the H0 value 7.
c)Yes. Because again 95 % chance is mean lies between -34 and -28. our alpha is .01. so we should've calculated a 99% confidence interval. But, that would be even narrower. and that definitely wouldn't contain -23.
