Question
Suppose you with to find exactly one of four special eggs in a carton of a dozen. You are allowed to select three eggs. You select eggs without replacement. Which distribution do you use, binomial or hypergeometric? (circle) What is the probability you succeed? P = _________ Suppose you wish to find exactly one of four special eggs in a carton of a dozen. You are allowed to select three eggs. You replace eggs in the carton after every try. Which distribution do you use, binomial or hypergeometric? (circle) What is the probability you succeed? P = ________Explanation / Answer
1ans:Without replacement so we wil use hypergeometric distribution.
prob=(4C1)(8C2)/(12C3)=28/55.
2ans:
a)hypergeometric distribution is used when sampling without replacement but here replacement is done so we will go with bionomial distribution.
b)probabilty of success=4/12=1/3
failure prob=2/3.
as we want exactly one egg
so probability=(3c1)(1/3)^1(2/3)^2=4/9.
