Question
A researcher is interested in whether social assertiveness might be influenced by training procedures. Two groups of college sophomores are randomly selected. Group A is assigned to the "training sessions", whereas the subjects in Group B are allowed to get on with their lives in any way they choose. Both groups are then given the "Social Assertiveness" test, (high scores indicating greater assertiveness), and the results were as follows:
Group A: 14, 11, 10, 10, 8, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11
Group B: 12, 10, 10, 8, 7, 3, 8, 6, 5, 4
Calculate/report the SED for both groups combined
Calculate/report the independent t ratio
Is this a one-tail or two-tail hypothesis?
Report the Table Critical Value.
Do you reject or accept the null hypothesis at alpha .05?
The effect size is Strong, Medium, Weak or Not significant?
Calculate and report results from the Levene Test for Homogeneity of Variances.
Are the two groups homoscedastic?
Based on your answer to item m above, what does that mean with regard to the two samples in problem # 5?
Explanation / Answer
Group A: 14, 11, 10, 10, 8, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11
Mean = 9.7 and Standard Deviation = 2.1628
Group B: 12, 10, 10, 8, 7, 3, 8, 6, 5, 4
Mean = 7.3 and Standard Deviation = 2.8693
Calculate/report the SED for both groups combined
SEDCombined = sqrt[ ( n1 -1)s12 + ( n2 -1)s22]/(n1 + n2 -2) = sqrt [ (9 * 4.68 + 9 * 8.23)/18] = 2.5406
Calculate/report the independent t ratio = (Mean 1 - Mean 2) / (SEDCombined/sqrt(n)) = (9.7 - 7.3) / (2.5406 *sqrt(1/n1 + 1/n2) = 2.4 / (2.5406 *sqrt(2/9) ) = 2.004
Is this a one-tail or two-tail hypothesis: It is a two tail hypotheis
Null Hypotheis : H0 : Mean 1 = mean 2 that means there is no effect of training sessions on social assertiveness
ALternative Hypothesis : Ha : Mean 1 Mean 2 that means there is effects of training session on " social assertivenes.
Table critical T - value will be calculated with help of degree of freedom dF
dF = n1 +n2 - 2
so for dF = 18 , and alpha = 0.05 ,
tcritical = 2.101
so t < tcritical so we can not reject null hypothesis and say there is no significant impact of " training sessions" .
Effect Size = 2
Here it is two standerd deviation difference that shows the effect size is strong.
