Question

Annual per capita consumption of milk is 21.6 gallons (Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2006). Being from the Midwest, you believe milk consumption is higher there and wish to support your opinion. A sample of 16 individuals from the mid western town of Webster City showed a sample mean annual consumption of 24.1 gallons with a standard deviation of s = 4.8.

Develop a hypothesis test that can be used to determine whether the mean annual consumption in Webster City is higher than the national mean.

H0:  Selectgreater than 21.6 greater than or equal to 21.6, equal to 21.6, less than or equal to 21.6, less than 21.6, not equal to 21.6
Ha:  Selectgreater than 21.6 greater than or equal to 21.6, equal to 21.6, less than or equal to 21.6, ess than 21.6, not equal to 21.6

At  = .05, complete the following:

Calculate the value of the test statistic (to 2 decimals).

The p-value is Select less than .005, between .005 and .01, between .01 and .025, between .025 and .05, between .05 and .10, between .10 and .20, greater than .20

What is your conclusion?
Select Conclude the population mean consumption of milk in Webster City is greater than the National mean, Do not conclude the population mean consumption of milk in Webster City is greater than the National meanItem 5

Explanation / Answer

H0: mu equal to 21.6,

Ha: mu greater than 21.6

test statistic:

x = 24.1 , s = 4.8 , n = 16 , mean = 21.6

t = ( x - mean) / ( s/sqrt(n))

= ( 24.1 - 21.6) / ( 4.8 / sqrt(16))

= 2.0833

degrees of freedom = 16 - 1 = 15

p-value = 0.0274

p-value lies between  0.025 and 0.05

As p-value is less than significance level of 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis. This means the population mean consumption of milk in Webster City is greater than the National mean.
