Question

8. (a) There are 12,500 students at Brooklyn College. About 1500 of them are in the Elementary Education prog Suppose one student will be picked at random and given a full scholarship. What is the probability that the winner will NOT be in the Elementary Education program? (Express your final answer as a percent). (b) In a certain company with ten employees the four lowest paid employees each have a salary of $30,000 The next lowest paid employee has a salary of $40,000 and the five highest paid employees have an avera salary of $60,000. (i) What is the mean salary of all ten employees? (ii) Can you determine the median salary of all ten employees? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

8(a). The probability that the winner of the scholarship is from the elementary education program is 1500/12500= 0.12. Hence, the probability that the winner of the scholarship is not from the elementary education program is 1-0.12 = 0.88.

(b). (i).The mean salary of all ten employees is (4*30000+40000+5*60000)/10=(120000+40000+300000)/ 10 = 460000/10 = $ 46000.

(ii). The median is the value separating the lower half of a data sample, from the higher/upper half of the data. Here, we know the actual salaries of the lower 5 employees , but the salaries of the higher 5 employees are not known. The median, in this case is the average of the 5th and 6th employees, starting from the lowest. Now, since the salary of the 6th employee, starting from the lowest is not known, the median salary cannot be determined.
