Question
I've been working through someImplicit Differentiation problems and I keep ending up with the wrong signs in my answer. (As in, negatives where there should be positives and visa versa)
My homework is entered online, and the program says that the answer is wrong.
In one particular problem, I moved the terms that had y' in them to the left hand side of the equation, and all other terms to the right. The signs in my answer were wrong.
I did the problem again, except I moved all of the terms with the y' to the right instead of to the left, and I got the right answer.
I don't understand why that is, because it shouldn't matter which side I choose to move the y' terms to - should it?
Explanation / Answer
NO, it should not matter at all. As long you are correctly interchanging sides with correct signs, it must not matter.
for example,
4y + 3 = 0
so, 4y = -3
or, - 3 = 4y
are same. Both give y = -3/4.
