Question
Problem #1: Consider the problem of traveling in an electric car. Suppose that you plan on making a trip in your electric car from city A to city B and that there are 3 charging stations between the two cities (only certain stations exist). The distances are as follows; - From city A to station 1: 20 km From station 1 to station 2: 30 km - From station 2 to station 3: 50 km From station 3 to city B: 60 km The maximum distance that this electric car will travel without recharging is 85 km. Unfortunately, it takes a while to recharge the car so that if another electric car is being charged, you will be facing a lengthy delay. Assume that you know when another car is being charged and that you will avoid that station, if possible. Otherwise you will plan on charging at only two stations during your journey (if you need to charge at all three stations, you will experience a significant delay) In the risk assessment of this situation, the event of concern is "mission failure", that is, the electric car not reaching its final destination, City B, without a lengthy delay. Risk management might involve, say, recommending that the stations install redundant charging systems to reduce the risk of a delay The questions fall into three categories a) Event Modeling Analyze the predicament of the car trip by constructing an event tree ii) a fault tree iii) a block diagram Note: Define all relevant events and show where they fit on the event or fault tree, and on the block agram b) Risk Assessment Denote by p the chance of encountering a delay at a particular station, the same chance for each station, and assume that events are independent from station to station. Now express the "risk of trip failure" in terms of p c) Risk Management Consider these two alternative recommendations regarding installing improved charging systems (as- sume a fixed budget) Option 1: Provide a high-speed charging system at one station, such that the chance of encountering a significant delay at that station drops from p to 0 Provide redundant (but slow-speed) charging systems at all three stations, so that the chance of encountering a delay at any one station drops from p to (2/3)p Option 2:Explanation / Answer
A--(20Km)----station 1---(30km)-----station 2-----(50km)-----station 3-----(60km)----B
Risky station are station station 2 and 3 because without recharging at you can travel upto station station one and two but before station 3 you have to recharge it to avoid risk because without recharge it can travel only upto 85 kms. Because you need to recharge only at two stations, recharging at station one you will travel upto station 3 without recharging at station 2 and can reach final destination without rist. If all stations are provided with high speed charging then risk changes from p to 0 but if there is delay at all stations there is a risk of delay
