Question

55. Mike and Jose flip the same coin every day at work to decide who pays for the morning coffee. After looking over credit card receipts, Jose realizes that he's paid 73 of the last 100 days. Can Jose conclude that there's something funny about the coin they're flipping? Discuss. 56. When entering a chemistry class one semester, a stu- dent decided that he had a 50% chance of passing the class. He justified this by saying "Only two things can happen: I'll either pass or I won't." Critique the student's reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

1. Probability of a person's winning is 1/2.That is 50%.

After loosing 73 times, Jose can also conclude that may be the coin was biased. (i. e or an unfair coin where the probability is not 1/2)

2. A student entering a class has two options, that either he will get pass or fail. So the chances are equal(1/2) that is 50-50% . There is no midway.
