Question

Exercise 1. Our model for population growth started from a word equation for how population size changes from time k to time k +1; this question will give you some practise on writing down these word equations: (a) You are building a mathematicodel for the population of red wolves (an endangered spccies of wolf that lives in the Southeastern United States). Write down a word equation relating the population Nk, in a specific wildlife reserve, in one year to the population Nk+i in the next year Your equation will include the following terms: Number of red wolves born in the wild # wolves removed for captive breeding . # wolves reintroduced into the wild from, captive breeding ·# wolves killed in automobile accidents Can you think of two additional effects (there are no uniquely correct answers) that should go into your word equation?

Explanation / Answer

Given the number of red wolves in wild is Nk for the year k and the number in the next year is Nk+1.

Thus from the given terms we can writh the word equation as

Nk+1= Nk + No.of red wolves born in the wild (nborn)- No.of red wolves removed for captive breeding(nrem) + No.of red wolves reintroduced into the wild from captive breeding(nreint) - No.of red wolves killed in automobile accidents(nacc)

Nk+1= Nk+nborn-nrem+nreint-nacc...............(a)

There can be other effects which can effect the population of the redwolves. They are

Nk+1= Nk+nborn-nrem+nreint-nacc-naging-ndisease................(2)
