Q.1.1.1 How many cookies are available for sale in their tuckshop? Q.1.1.2 If, during lunch time, Sibusiso and his uncle eat 13 of the cookies and, at Q.1.1 the end of their business day, they have 147 cookies left, how many cookies did they sell? Before he sets of for work, Shiwanga jogs in the nearby field for 30 minutes. He then takes another 15 minutes in the bathroom. Dressing up for work and breakfast takes him 45 minutes. Shiwanga's workplace is 1 hour 20 minutes away Q.1.2.1 Calculate the total amount of time, in hours and minutes, that Shiwanga Q.1.2 takes jogging, bathing, dressing, eating and travelling to work If Shiwanga wakes up at 5:30 am, at what times does he reach his workplace? Q.1.2.2 A factory employs 25 workers. Each worker manufactures 30 chairs in a week, at a cost of R180 per chair. Q.1.3.1 How many chairs does the factory manufacture each week? Q.1.3.2 What is the total weekly cost of manufacturing chairs? Q.1.3Explanation / Answer
Q1.1.1 Sibusiso baked 513 cookies yesterday, and 143 this morning. So, he has 513 + 143 = 656 cookies in total. His uncle brought 672 cookies to their tuckshop. Sibusiso can sell the cookies he baked as well as the cookies his uncle brought. Assuming Sibusiso baked the cookies at their tuckshop, a total of 656 + 672 = 1328 cookies will be for sale at their tuckshop.
Q1.1.2 During lunch time, he and his uncle ate of the 13 cookies. So, they will have 1328 - 13 = 1315 cookies left. At the end of the day, they have 147 cookies left. So, they must have sold the remaining cookies. So, the number of cookies they sold = 1315 - 147 = 1168. So, they sold 1168 cookies.
Q,1.2.1 Shiwanga jogs for 30mins, and takes 15 mins in bathroom. He dresses up and does his breakfast for 45 minutes. His workplace is 1 hr 20 mins away. Now, 1 hr = 60 mins. So, 1hr 20 mins = 60 mins + 20 mins = 80 mins. Then, total time taken by him in jogging, bathing, dressing, eating and travelling to work will be 30 mins + 15 mins + 45 mins + 80 mins = 170 mins. Now, 1 hr = 60 mins, so 2 hrs = 120 mins. We can thus write 170mins as 120 mins + 50 mins = 2hrs 50 mins. So, the total time taken by him is 2hrs 50 mins.
Q1.2.2 Shiwanga wakes up at 5:30am. So, he reaches his workplace 2 hrs 50 mins later. We break 2hrs 50 minutes into 3 parts, 2hrs, 30 mins, and 20 mins. Then we add them one by one. 2 hrs past 5:30 am is 7:30am. 30 mins past 7:30am is 8:00am. 20 mins past 8:00am is 8:20am. So, Shiwanga reaches his workplace at 8:20 am.
Q.1.3.1. A factory employs 25 workers, each of whom manufacture 30 chairs a week at a cost of R180 per chair. Since each worker manufactures 30 chairs a week, and there are 25 workers, the factory will manufacture 25 X 30 chairs = 750 chairs each week.
Q.1.3.2 The manufacturing cost of each chair is R180. We found out that 750 chairs are manufactured weekly. So, the total weekly cost of manufacturing the chairs will be 750 X R180 = R13500
