ID: 3201208 • Letter: A

Question

An inspector for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration obtains all vitamin pills produced in an hour at the Health Supply Company. She thoroughly mixes them, then scoops a sample of 10 pills that are to be tested for the exact amount of vitamin content. Does this sampling plan result in a random sample? Explain. This sampling plan does not result in a true random sample. It is a random sample of a cluster sample. Since the pills produced in that one hour were separated from all the other pills, not every pill had the same chance of being chosen.

Explanation / Answer

I would say it is a random sample. It is because I am assuming that the total number of vitamin pills produced are much much greater than 10 and that she is mixing thoroughly to get a uniformity in the mixture.

Moreover her sample would tend to normality is she takes a relatively larger sample of size greater than 30.
