Question

The Rocky Mountain district sales manager of Rath Publishing Inc., a college textbook publishing company, claims that the sales representatives make an average of 39 sales calls per week on professors. Several reps say that this estimate is too low. To investigate, a random sample of 45 sales representatives reveals that the mean number of calls made last week was 44. The standard deviation of the sample is 2.6 calls. Using the 0.010 significance level, can we conclude that the mean number of calls per salesperson per week is more than 39?

Explanation / Answer

Ho : Mu pop = 39

Ha : Mu pop != 39

sample size = 45

Standard deviation = 2.6 calls

Sample mean = 44 calls

Z = (X-Mupop)/Stdev = (44-39)/2.6 = 1.923

NOw Z equalivalent for .010 significant level ( 1 sided ) is 2.33

If our Z score is more than 2.33 then we can conclude that the mean number of calls per salesperson per week is more than 39

Our z score = 1.92< 2.33. Hence we cannot reject null hypothesis. WE can't conclude that the mean number of calls per salesperson per week is more than 39.

Therefore, we accept the nullhypo, saying Mu pop = 39
