Question

One of the items on a survey instrument administered to a large statistics class at Penn State University was, "What is the maximum speed you've ever driven?". Their answers were entered into a spreadsheet under the variable name "fastest". Let's assume that the survey participants (88 men and 104 women) were truthful in their responses. Use the descriptive statistics output below to answer the following questions. Note that this computer output contains more information than is needed to answer these questions. It is common for statistical output to contain not just the numbers you are looking for, but also numbers you are not interested in. The fastest maximum speed driven by anyone in the class is: mph The fastest maximum speed driven by a male is: mph The speed for which 1/2 of the males had driven this fast or fastor is: mph The number of men who had a maximum speed of 110 mph or more is The proportion of all students in the sample who had a maximum speed of 95 mph or slower is:

Explanation / Answer

1;

The fastest maximum speed driven by anyone in the class is 150 mph.

2:

The fastest maximum speed driven by male in the class is 150 mph.

3:

This is given by the median of males. SO required speed is 110 mph.

4:

It is 50% of count of males. So requried number of males is 0.50 * 88= 44

5:

Since 95 mph is first quartile for males so number of males having speed 95 mph or less is 0.25 * 88 = 22

Since 95 mph is third quartile for females so number of females having speed 95 mph or less is 0.75 * 104 = 78

That is total number of students in the sample who had a maximum speed of 95 mph of slower is 22+78 = 100 out of students 104+88=192.

So required proprotion is 100 / 192 = 0.521
