There is a whole new vocabulary that must be learned when you talk about statistics. Read the following article that was written for journalists so they can have a basic understanding of the language used in statistics: Is it too simplistic to say that statistics is basically counting, comparing, predicting, and reporting? Why or why not? What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics? Give examples of each as if you are explaining the concepts to someone with no knowledge of statistics.

Statistics for the most part does involve counting, comparing, predicting, and reporting however it does not mean that is the only component to it. Statistics is used to understand and make sense of the data and also to predict the behaviour of a larger population based on the data of a similar population. Hence it is too simplistic to say that it involves only a few calculations. Descriptive statistcis gives information about the data by doing calculations like average,mean ,sum etc Inferential statistics is used for making predictions on the data for eg . trying to identify the response of a population based on the data available of a small sample
