Question

The table below shows the 5-number summary for the run times in minutes of the 200 highest grossing movies of last year. Are there any outliers in the data? Explain. Choose the correct answer below. Yes, because while the minimum is within 1.5 lQRs of the lower quartile, the maximum is beyond 15 WORs above the upper quartile. No, because the maximum is within 1.5 IQRs of the upper the minimum is beyond 1.5 IQRs below the lower quartile. Yes, because the minimum is beyond 1.5 ORs below the lower quartile, and the maximum is beyond 1.5 lQRs quartile. No, because the minimum is within 1.5 lQRs of the lower quartile and the maximum is within 1.5 lQRs of the upper quartile.

Explanation / Answer

To find outlier we find

Lower quartile - 1.5 IQR

IQR = Upper quartile -Lower quartile = 121-96 = 25

1.5IQR = 1.5 * 25 =37.5

Lower quartile - 37.5 = 96 - 37.5 = 58.5

Upper quartile + 37.5 = 121 + 37.5 = 158.5

If minimum beyond 58.5 and maximum is below 158.5 then we say that there is no outlier in the data.

Here min is 16 which is < 58.5 and maximum is 173 which is beyond 158.5 hence we say that there is outlier in the data

Ans: Yes, because minimum is within 1.5 IQR of the lower bound and maximum is beyond 1.5 IQRs of upper bound.
