Question
Refer to a standard deck of playing cards. If you are unfamiliar with playing cards, see the description on page 650. During a game of Gin Rummy, Sven needs the eight of diamonds to make a straight in his hand. He and the other player have been dealt 10 cards each, the other player does not have the card he wants, and all other cards are in the deck. What is the probability that the next card picked from the deck is the eight of diamonds? Express your answer as an integer or a simplified fraction.
Explanation / Answer
In order to get to the solution we first need to know the number of cards remaining the deck which are yet to be dealt. SInce 10 cards each are being already dealt , remaining cards =52-20 =32, as the total number of cards in the deck is 52.
Now out of 32, the card that is going to be picked up should be eight of diamonds, and there is only card having eight of diamonds in a standard deck of cards. hence the required probability would be 1/32
