Question
Design an experiment to test whether or not drinking alcohol increases the likelihood that a person will ask someone they find attractive out on a date. Your answer should include a statement of your hypothesis, a description the independent variable in your experiment (what it is you're manipulating in your experiment), the dependent variable (what you are measuring), the control group, and a brief description of the how you would perform the experiment. Is this just a yes or no hypothesis? How would you a hypothesis statement?
Explanation / Answer
The hypothesis formualtion would be as follows :
H0 : drinking alcohol does not increase the likelihood that a person will ask someone they find attractive out on a date
H1 : drinking alcohol increases the likelihood that a person will ask someone they find attractive out on a date
Basically the null hypothesis states that there is NO relationship at all and the alternate hypothesis is to find the answer to the interested question
The independent variable would be 2 groups , control group who do not dirink alcohol
treatment group : group who drinks alcohol
dependent variable would be to measure the attractiveness scale , say on a scale of 1 to 100
we can perform a independent sample t test to check whether there is any difference in the average scale of attractiveness for the 2 groups , one who drinks alcohol and one who doesnt. Set a significance level and calculate the p value , if the calculated p value is less than 0.05 we reject the null hypothesis in favor of alternate hypothesis
