i. In a voice communication system with 50 lines, the random variable is the number of lines in use at a particulr time.
Random variable : no. of lines in use. This can take a minimum value = 0 since none of the lines are in use and maximum value =50 at max all the 50 lines could be in use
the range : 0,50
ii . A batch of 500 machinedd parts contain 10 that do not conform to customer requirements. Parts are selected successively, without replacement unitl a nonconformaing part is obtained. The random variable is the number of parts selected.
Random Variable : No. of machined parts selected till the non-confirming part is selected . Minimum value =0 ; none of the machined parts are selected
and maximum value = 491, because the end point is when a non conforming part is detected. the extreme case that can happen is 490 confirming parts are selected (as it's given that there 10 non confirming parts) and 491th part has to be a non-confirming part.
The range is : 0 , 491
iii. Wood paneling can be ordered in thickness of 1/8,1/4, or 3/8 inch. The random variable is the total thickness of paneling in two orders.
Random variable : Total thicknes of two wood panelling ;
The possible values are :
1. 1/8+1/4 = 3/8
2. 1/4+3/8 = 5/8
3. 1/8+3/8 = 4/8
The minimum value is 3/8 inchs and maximum value = 5/8inchs
So the range : 3/8, 4/8
