Scenario: You are helping a professor who wants to know if certain strategies (Protective Behavioral Strategies) will be helpful for college students under 21 such that they report less alcohol consumption and fewer problems. We’re interested in testing several hypotheses. Participants were all college students at ODU. You collect data at one time-point.

Hypothesis 1: Hazardous alcohol use (AUDIT) is negatively related to academic performance (CGPA). Hypothesis 2: PBS use (PBSTotal) will be reported differently by men and women (Sex).             Hypothesis 3: Age and gender (Sex) will predict PBS use (PBSTotal).

What statistical tests can we use to test our hypotheses (hint: is it association, group differences, prediction?)?

Explanation / Answer

The significance test will be non parametric test Chi square test, because we have to find the association between different independent and dependent variables
