23. Cells can make ATP by 2 ways. The first one is glycolysis in which glucose is broken down 2 molecules of pyruvate the process usually takes place outside mitochondria in the cytoplasm.

This pyruvate undergoes cellular respiration to prodyce carbon dioxide and ATP.

The other way is fermentation. In fermentation the pyruvate is converted into lactic acid or ethanol and this process takes place in absence of oxygen.
