Question

This problem is based on Exercise 6-108. Viscosity measurements are taken from a batch chemical process over time. After a certain amount of time, measurements are taken from a different chemical process. Measurements are taken at equal intervals. A time series plot of viscosity measurements and a comparative boxplot for the two different processes are given below. a Based on the graphics, when do you think that the viscosity measurements start being recorded for the second batch chemical process? Justify your answer. b Compare the viscosity measurements for the two batch chemical processes to each other using at least one measure of center and one measure of scatter.

Explanation / Answer

Answer to part a)

From the first graph , the scatter plot we get to know that the second chemical's recording started at time instance 30

Justification:

In the first chemical process, the direction of scatters is increasing , as soon as the second chemical process began , it again initiated from a low reading and then increased with time. So we cna observe two different phases of increase in the reading on the scatter plot.

.

Answer to part b)

From the boxplot graph , we cna find the following observation:

Measure of central tendency: The mean of first chemical process comes around 15 and the mean of second chemical process comes around 18. Thus the mean viscosity of the second chemical process is higher than the first one

.

Measure of scatter: Ranfges is considered to be the simplest measure of scatter . it is the difference between the highest observation and the lowest observation

For chemical process one the range is apporxiamely equal to : 18 - 12 = 6

For chemical process two the range is approximately equal to: 22 - 16 = 6

Thus we can consider that both the chemical processes have same level of scattering or spread. It is just that the absolute values of viscosity for the second chemical process is higher than the first one
