Question

Every year as part of the family family holiday tradition the whole family bake something to give to their friends and relatives. This year they decided to make some special pastries. Mama family was very careful to make sure they baked plenty so there would be plenty to give away. If there was anything the family like better than baking it was eating. So during the night Papa got up and ate 1/3 of the pastries. He noticed his dog looking very hungry so he gave one pastry to his dog. Ed was the next to get up. he planned to eat one fourth of the pastries but when he separated them into four piles he found there were three pastries left over. He fed those three to his dog and then ate 1/4 of the remaining pastries. Lisa then got up and ate 1/3 of the remaining pastries. as she was heading back to bed her dog wine so she gave it to pastries. Julie was the last to get up and she consumed 8 pastries but then gave 1/8 of of those of those of those remaining to to her dog. When Mama went into the kitchen the next morning she found crumbs ants and only 14 pastries. Mama sighed realizing that they would have no pastries to give away again this year. She ate two pastries gave two to her dog and then split the remaining pastries evenly for her whole human family including herself to have for breakfast. How many pastries did the family bake and how many pastries did each person consume?

Explanation / Answer

The last 14 pastries were divided in the morning as follows:
Mama: 4
Papa, Ed, Lisa, Judy, and the dog: 2 each

Now back up to when Judy raided the kitchen. Those 14 were 7/8 of what she left, so the other eighth must have been 2 pastries given to the dog. Judy also ate 8 herself, so she found 24 when she got there, and those 24 were divided thus:
Judy: 10
Mama and the dog: 4 each
Papa, Ed, and Lisa: 2 each

Now back to Lisa's visit: She gave the dog 2 pastries, and before she did so, the 26 she had when she was about to leave the kitchen were 2/3 of what she found there. So she found 39 and ate 13 of them. Those 39 were divided:
Lisa: 15
Judy: 10
the dog: 6
Mama: 4
Papa and Ed: 2 each

Now back up to Ed's visit. The 39 that he left were 3/4 of what he had after giving 3 to the dog. So he had 52 in 4 piles and ate 13, and including the 3 given the dog, he found 55, which ended up consumed as follows:
Lisa and Ed: 15 each
Judy: 10
the dog: 9
Mama: 4
Papa: 2

Now back up to Papa's visit. He gave one pastry to the dog, and before that he had eaten 1/3, so the 56 pastries (55 he left, and one for the dog) are 2/3 of what he found there, which would have been 84 pastries of which he ate 28. Final score:
They baked 84 pastries.
Papa ate 30.
Lisa and Ed ate 15 each.
Judy and the dog ate 10 each.
Mama ate 4.
