Question
You are testing out a new healthier type of fruit-gummy snack, Unbelieva-Berry, as an alternative to the existing brand, I-Can-Believe-This-Isn't-Fruit, on a set of 2^nd graders. You have approximately 30 second graders as your experimental units. You will randomize the type of gummy snack that each student receives. Your friend Katy will administer the snacks, and your friend Shawn will interview the children to see how they enjoyed the snacks. You will tally the results after the fact. c) How could you make this a double-blind study? Be specific in the context of the scenario.Explanation / Answer
The very purpose of a Double Blind study is to eliminate biases. In this particular scenario, neither Kathy nor Shaw should know which fruit snack each of the 2nd grader received.
Since it's a randomised study, you create 2 groups of 15 each. One is the control group who are given the existing brand. The other, say Group 2 get the alternative brand. Critical aspect is, you and you alone know which brand each of the 30 received. In doing so, neither Kathy nor Shaw is influenced by their personal preferences or any underlying biases. For eg, if Shaw is a big fan of "I Can't Believe..", then he could subtly or subconsciously ask questions that would elicit a positive response from the kids.
